Description : |
Groups of tractors, cars and people at a large oval for the Golden Grove show. Captain Adam Robertson arrived in South Australia in September 1839 on the Lady Lilford. Previously he had commanded the ship Golden Grove. In 1846 Captain Robertson settled in the area which later came to be known as Golden Grove. A township with this name was not developed, but when a school was established, Captain Robertson permitted the name of his property - Golden Grove - to be conferred on the school, and a post office with this name was opened in the 1850s. The South Australian Register of 16 July 1859, p. 3d reports: ... Mr Robertson explains that Golden Grove is the name of his own place and not of the surrounding locality. He has apparently forgotten that he conferred that name on the public school ... and therefore the settlers cannot be blamed for extending it to the village as well. Under the entry for 'Golden Grove', the Sands & McDougall's South Australian directory for 1920 records a population of 127, with ...Communication between Modbury and Adelaide - Coach daily. Mail carried on horseback to Modbury; or five miles to Salisbury, thence train. The South Australian Land Commission began to acquire land for housing in the area in the early 1970s, and a decade later, the South Australian Urban Land Trust worked with Delfin company to develop the area. The last allotment was sold in 2002. |
