The Ball Family children, Mollie, Rob, Jack, and Pete playing 'tennis' in their backyard. Two boxes either side, and balanced by the younger boys, support a sheet as the net. Mollie stands in the foreground and Rob, nearest the gate, prepares to serve. The children are imitating adults; tennis was, and remains, a popular and highly sociable game played at many levels. Most country towns could boast of tennis courts alongside an oval and probably a netball court. The photographer and children's father was RH Ball, Manager of the National Bank at Angaston, during the 1890s. |
