Portrait of George Woodroffe Goyder. George Woodroffe Goyder migrated to Sydney in 1848 and joined the South Australian government in 1851. He held the positions of chief clerk of the Department of Lands, assistant surveyor-general and surveyor-general. Later he was chairman of the railways commission and forest board. Goyder is most well known for mapping a line of rainfall through South Australia, marking out the lands which received enough rain each year to sustain agriculture. He also surveyed the Northern Territory and suggested Darwin (then Palmerston) as the site for its capital. |
