King William Street, Adelaide and the eastern part of Victoria Square looking south, from a view taken from the roof of the old Treasury Buildings in Flinders Street. The old Supreme Court and Local and Insolvency Court buildings can be seen at the south end of the square. This image is from an album of 50 photographs of Adelaide and country subjects by Samuel White Sweet. Built in 1839, the Treasury Building was designed by colonial architect George Strickland Kingston. Underneath the building are tunnels constructed in the 1850s. The tunnels still contain a furnace which is thought to have been used to smelt gold transported to Adelaide from the Victorian gold fields during the gold rush of that period. |
