After a brief interlude as a merchant and importer, Charles Fisher went into partnership with his brother James in pastoral leases. They bought Bundaleer near Clare in 1854 and Hill River, near Clare in 1855 after selling large numbers of sheep and cattle to the Victorian goldfields. C.B. Fisher would become one of the biggest pastoralists in Australia with properties in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland and later in the Northern Territory. However, he lost heavily in land speculation in the Territory and in 1895 became bankrupt and retired to Melbourne and finally to Adelaide.

Fisher was a keen sportsman and a great horseman and owned and bred horses for the turf. He also ensured that the draught horses used on his large farming operations at Hill River were well bred animals. The Victorian Racing Club 'C.B. Fisher Plate' which ceased being run in 1978 was named after him.

He died 6 May 1908 at Glenelg.
