Description :

The German Club in Pirie Street, Adelaide.

The Deutsche (German) Club was formed in Adelaide in 1854 by a group of upper middle-class German emigrants with the aim of preserving and enjoying German high culture ('kultur'), customs and language. This impressive Club building was erected in the 1880s. In 1886 a less exclusive German club was formed, the South Australian German Association (Sudaustralischer Allgemeiner Deutscher Verein). The original club folded in 1907 but the German Association continues today.
