This is followed by a list of residents of Oenpelli who were paid by the Expedition during its stay, including their assigned tasks and rations/wages.

Evident in the Mountford-Sheard correspondence files is the conflict that arose during the Expedition between Mountford and the administrative staff of the Arnhem Land missions, most notably the two Church Missionary Society (CMS) missions of Groote Eylandt and Oenpelli. J Bruce Montgomerie of the CMS wrote that 'It was extremely difficult to work in harmony and goodwill with him... he expected all work on the Mission to cease while he used the Aborigines for various works required to be done.' (A history of Oenpelli, p. 61).

There is a continual stream of correspondence between the Missions and Mountford, debating the payment of accounts, and the compensation given for the use of Aboriginal labour.  The final resolution of these matters came over a year after the completion of the Expedition, with the Department of Information finally settling all payments.
