Description : |
A team of eight donkeys towing a Chevrolet truck across the dry bed of the Palmer River, driven by several stockmen, Middleton Ponds Station. The Board of enquiry travelled from Alice Springs, south-west to Middleton Ponds Station, en route to Uluru. They needed to transfer to a lorry, an old Chevrolet truck 'whose days of youthfulness had long since passed' (PRG 1218/5/3 page 7), as the car they were travelling in had broken down due to the rough travelling. This of course meant unpacking and repacking all the supplies, plus splitting them up between the people who had decided to stay at the Station and those who had decided to continue on to 'Liddle's Place', where the party was to transfer to camels for transport to Uluru. They needed to cross the dry bed of the Palmer River, over a quarter of a mile wide, and after the truck was buried up to the axle in gravel-sand, a team of eight donkeys was harnessed to haul the vehicle across. |
