Newspaper article noting that the 'rivers problem' has not yet been settled. It suggests that if the River Murray was regulated by a series of locks and storage areas there would be no need to divide the water amongst the states In 1902 an Interstate Royal Commission was established to investigate the uses of the Murray and its waters. The Royal Commission attempted to strike a balance between irrigation and navigation interests by establishing the proportion of water that each of the states was allowed to take from the river. Extracts from this newspaper article note that the 'rivers problem' has not yet been settled. They suggest that if the river was regulated by a series of locks and storage areas there would be no need to divide the water amongst the states. |
