Description :

An inscription on the artwork, an ink sketch with watercolour wash, reads 'Ben Payne, known as 'The Admiral', first runner of The Register newspaper in the early days of the colony'. A 'runner' was a boy employed to deliver the newspaper after it was printed. There is also a notation which reads 'By F.J. Cox, from a sketch by S.T. Gill' which suggests this item is a copy of Gill's original work. According to a reference to The Register of 9 December 1848 (p.1 col. c). on the back of the painting, the runner's name could have been Harry Paine.
