Description : |
A portrait of Captain John Finlay Duff, Master of the Africaine. In 1836, Captain Duff transported South Australian pioneers and their families on the Africaine to South Australia, including Robert and Mary Thomas, A.W. Gliddon and W.A. Deacon. The South Australian gazette and colonial register (8 July 1837, p. 3-4) refers to an extract from Robert Fisher's journal which includes a complaint regarding Captain Duff's conduct towards the party which made a journey to the interior of Kangaroo Island in November 1836. South Australian gazette and colonial register (12 August 1837, p. 6, col. a) featured a report of Robert Gouger's letter vindicating Captain Duff against the charges made by Robert Fisher. Fisher's reply concerning Gouger's responsibility in the matter appears in the 16 September 1837 issue, p. 6. |
