Description : |
In 1836 Thomas Hardy inherited the Yorkshire manors of Birksgate and Shepley. Although he and his wife never visited South Australia, their two sons, Alfred and Arthur, both came to the new colony. Alfred arrived in 1836 aboard the Cygnet as a member of Light's survey party, and Arthur arrived on the Platina in 1838. The brothers eventually owned the land granted to their father in Angas Street, Adelaide. The original land grant document made out to Thomas Hardy in 1837, was donated to the State Library of SA in 1952 by a descendant of Alfred Hardy. (SeeD 3207 (Misc).) The grant for town section 414 in Angas Street, was issued under preliminary land sales in England, signed by James Hurtle Fisher, and dated 23 December 1837. Later notation on the folded section of the document refers to its receipt into the Registry Office, Adelaide on 4 November 1853. |
