Colonel William Light, Surveyor General of the newly founded colony of South Australia, was authorised to select an acre of land for the South Australian Church Society. He selected the site where Holy Trinity Church stands on North Terrace. Mr. Pascoe St. Leger Grenfell contributed Town Acre No. 9 for the building of the Church, the first in Adelaide. A temporary Church was used until the stone building was completed in 1838 when the foundation stone was laid by Governor Hindmarsh on 26 January. Several alterations and additions have been made, with a major reconstruction of the building in the late 1880s. Anglican births or baptisms, deaths and marriages were registered at Adelaide (Holy) Trinity Church until civil registration commenced in South Australia on 1 January 1842. |
