G & R Wills & Co. Ltd. building on North Terrace photographed in 1878. The building was designed by Wright, Woods and Hamilton in 1865 and extended from Rundle Street (now Rundle Mall) to North Terrace. Construction was quoted at 2600 pounds, but increased during construction to 3890 pounds. The building included a large cellar.The building was refaced and greatly extended to a design by Daniel Garlick in the 1870s. The facades are of ashlar sandstone walling and cement dressings. Corinthian pilasters, quoins and parapets complete the building which overall incorporates Renaissance design elements with Italianate flourishes. G & R Wills were a merchant firm which played a significant role in the commercial development of South Australia. G & R Wills traded throughout Australia and opened a buying house in London in 1859. The firm prospered and moved into these premises in 1867. The building is listed in the South Australian Heritage Register. |
