Description : |
This watercolour sketch by an Charles Summers shows a flour mill on the north west corner of West Terrace and Waymouth Street, Adelaide (acre 186). The mill was built by HW Phillips, under the supervision of the architect, GS Kingston. It was the second windmill to be built in Adelaide with building started in August 1842. The mill sustained some storm damage in February 1843. It was later refitted as a steam mill in 1845. Adelaide's first windmill was completed in July 1842 on acre 462 , Wright Street by Job Gould Malin. This became known as the City Mill. The Phillips mill, later known as the West Terrace Steam and Wind Mill), depicted in the artwork was located on acre 186. By 1845 both mills were owned jointly by Stevens, Phillips and De Horne. By 1850 they had sold the mill to Giles and Smith. The mill was still in use when it was destroyed by fire in 1876. It was demolished some time later. |
