Description : |
This architectural drawing shows the front and side views of proposed extensions to the fish markets. As part of the 1899 redevelopment of the City Market in Grote Street, extensive additions were made to the fish market. The fish market was demolished in 1922 when extensions were needed for an arcade which provided an extra 32 shops. In the early 1880s, newly laid railway lines to the State's north brought a considerable increase in the supply of fish to the city from Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Edithburgh. By 1884 two market shops selling fish had grown into a substantial fish market in a large brick fronted shed built on market land leased by Edwin Daw. Since its establishment it had been updated by the addition of a refrigeration plant for fish as well as fruit and vegetables. The Adelaide City Council had established the Adelaide City Market by 1869 and wanted to turn its attention to the development of the remainder of the property. Part of this development was a fish market, a council depot and stables in the area where the market arcade is today. |
