Description : |
Government Offices, south view on the corner of Flinders and King William Streets and facing Victoria Square. From a sketch by FR Nixon, 1846. The current classically inspired building replaced a single storey structure built to George Strickland Kingston's design in 1839 which included accommodation for the Colonial Secretary, the Colonial Treasurer, Accountant General, Land Office and the Survey Office. Most of Kingston's building was demolished in stages to make way for the two and three storey additions that were built between 1858 and 1907. The heritage listed building was surplus to government requirements during the 1990s and eventually was acquired and sensitively refurbished as hotel apartments. The Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury as it is now, received an Award of Merit at the 2003 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation. |
