Description :

Art Gallery, North Terrace, October 1926

The Art Gallery of South Australia's North Terrace premises were purpose-built for the Gallery in 1889 by the Government of South Australia. This project was stimulated by a bequest of 25,000 pounds for the purchase of artworks from Sir Thomas Elder in 1897. Architect-in-Chief Mr Owen Smythe designed the Gallery in Classical Revival style. Messrs Tudgeon undertook the building work. The building was completed in 1900 and became known as the Elder Wing.

The original design of the Gallery at the time, included an enclosed portico at the North Terrace entrance which is visible in this photograph. In 1936 spurred on by the donation of 10,000 pounds from Alexander Melrose and a further 16,000 pounds contributed by the Government the Gallery was refurbished and enlarged to include a new facade with an open doric portico.

The Gallery underwent further enlargement in 1962 which included a three storey airconditioned addition on the northern side providing administration offices and additional gallery space.

In 1979 the gallery underwent a general refurbishment in time for its centenary celebrations in 1981, and underwent large expansion and refurbishment work in 1995-1996.

The gallery is listed in the Register of the National Estate and in the South Australian Heritage Register.
