Description : |
Parliament House, North Terrace photographed in 1939. It would take 50 years from the completion of the west wing in 1889, for South Australia's Parliament House to be finally completed. In 1934 Adelaide businessman and philanthropist Sir Langdon Bonython made a generous 100,000 pounds donation towards the completion of the building. Work finally began in 1936, the state's centenary year. Kapunda marble and West Island granite was again obtained to complete the building. Despite being built in two sections 50 years apart, the only external signs of difference are the lamps on the stone staircase at the western end and six headsof leading parliamentarians and Governors carved in the keystones of the upstairs windows. The imposing building has a colonnade of ten Corinthian columns across the front and a gracious flight of marble steps up from the footpath of North Terrace. The eastern or King William Road side has appropriate pilasters, to match the main facade. These are not visible in this photograph. Sometime during the construction of the second section the 4 ornamental urns located on the parapet of Parliament house disappeared. In 1989 six replica urns were installed to complete the original design. Parliament house is listed on the Register of the National Estate, the National Heritage List and the South Australian Heritage Register. |
