Description : |
Adelaide Oval opened a grandstand for public use in 1882. From the initial meeting held in January, through architects' and builders' tenders, this stand was opened in November 1882. In 1889 the original stand was extended to the rear by a dining room and ladies retiring rooms. This was the basis for the George Giffen stand. A new adjoining stand, which this plan may be, was built with a bar and dressing rooms below and was designed by English and Soward. At a meeting in 1871 the South Australian Cricket Association was established and it recommended that a cricket ground should be formally designated in a central lcoation. A lease was granted by the City of Adelaide Corporation to lease a section of the parklands for this purpose. Substantial upgrading of the oval's stands occurred in the 1920s when column supported roofing was replaced by cantilevered structures. Over the years the original grandstand has been absorbed by rebuilding, however the overall appearance of Adelaide has changed very little and remains one of the most picturesque cricket ovals in the world. Adelaide oval and its surrounds, including three of the stands are listed on the Register of the National Estate and the South Australian Heritage Register. |
