Description : |
The main staircase at Moore\'s Department store The main staircase at Moore's Department store in Victoria Square photographed about 1914. Arthur Garlick and Herbert Jackman designed the building and English architect William Lucas designed the central staircase and came over from England to fit it. The store suffered a major fire in March 1948, and the only bits of the building which retain some of their original integrity are the central staircase and the facade. Charles Moore made a bold move in the 1880s when he established his retail business in Victoria Square away from the main Adelaide retail centre in Rundle and Hindley Streets. In 1911 he had prospered sufficiently to have built a large department store, of which the central staircase was a grand and elegant feature. Located in Victoria Square, it is allegedly modelled upon the famous Parisian department store Galleries Lafayette. The building has been refurbished and is now known as the Sir Samuel Way Building and houses the State's District Courts. |
