Description : |
The proposed new Parliament buildings, North Terrace. Adelaide architect Edmund Wright together with Melbourne architect Lloyd Tayler won the 1873 design competition for the new South Australian Parliament House. The new building would replace the brick building which had housed the Parliament since 1843, but which with the growth in parliamentary represenation was now too small. However it was not until 1881 that the South Australian government decided to commit to the construction of the building and work began in 1883 under the supervision of Edward John Woods. The first phase of work was completed in 1889. This west wing housed the House of Assembly. The design was not completed fully until 1936 when Sir Langdon Bonython donated 100,000 pounds to complete the building. It is considered regrettable by some that the planned central dome was omitted. Comparison with the completed building also reveals changes to the southern and eastern facades of the plan. |
