Description : |
West wing of Parliament House, North Terrace photographed in 1928. Building began in 1883, 10 years after the design competition for the building had been won by Edmund Wright and Lloyd Tayler. It was completed in 1889. Construction material was sourced from the colony: the grey marble from Kapunda, north of Adelaide, and the granite from West Island off Victor Harbor in the south. With some modifications made to Wright and Tayler's design, as only part of the building would be built at this time, the builders still allowed foundations and superstructure of sufficient strength, to bear the dome, should it be added at a future date. The only external signs that the western end of the building was constructed fifty years earlier than the rest are the lamps on the staircase and six faces carved in the keystones of the upstairs windows. The faces are those of leading parliamentarians and Governors of that era.Sometime during the building of the second half of Parliament house in the 1930s the four ornamental urns sitting on the parapet were removed and lost. In 1989, 50 years after the building work was completed 6 reproduction urns, designed from the original drawings, were installed. |
