Description : |
Drawing for the building on North Terrace, south side, west corner of Gawler Place, originally intended for use as a school for the South Australian School Society. The South Australian School Society's building was located on the south-western corner of North Terrace and Gawler Place. The School Society was financed from London, having a committee convened in Adelaide in February 1838. Tenders were called for building a permanent stone structure in December 1839. When completed in 1841 it was occupied by the South Australian Company as offices, and the school operated out of accommodation in Light Square. The design of the building was undertaken by W Prescott and consisted of two classroom wings and a central two-storeyed building of rooms and offices. In 1913 the left wing and central building were demolished with the right wing following in 1914, for the building of Gawler Chambers which still stands on the site. |
