Description : |
View of the cupola and coat of arms above the Rundle Mall entrance to the Adelaide Arcade photographed in 2003. The Adelaide Arcade is located between Grenfell Street and Rundle Mall (formerly Rundle Street). It was built in 1885, towards the end of the 1880s South Australian boom, and took 200 tradespeople 6 months to build and cost 60,000 pounds. The arcade is constructed from brick with Portland cement dressings, and the slabs which are located at the entrances are of Kapunda marble. The design for the arcade was undertaken by Withall and Wells who also designed the Jubilee Exhibition building (now demolished), which was the only other 19th century building in Adelaide built with a dome. |
