Description : |
Silver trowel used by Alfred Allen Simpson, Mayor of Adelaide, when laying the foundation stone of additions to the Adelaide Town Hall buildings, April 1915. The Town Hall building was designed by Edmund Wright who had a preference for Italian architectural styles - therefore strong Florentine and Genoan design influences are visible in the design. Large pillars and arches form the impressive colonnade, and the carved heads of famous Italian artists such as Michelangelo and Donatello are alongside those representing Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort. The colonnade and above it, the Albert Tower are actually over the footpath itself. In the tower was a peal of bells, and the clock was not added until 1935, a gift of Councillor Bonython. A number of additions were made to the original building over the years. |
