Description : |
St. Peters Cathedral St Peters Cathedral photographed in about 1920. The interior of the cathedral is typically restrained in keeping with other Anglican church interiors and reflects the conservatism of colonial Adelaide. The costs of the building were met by the Adelaide establishment including Sir Thomas Elder and Robert Barr Smith and many others over the years. The original design of St Peter's Cathedral was undertaken by English architect William Butterfield who favoured brick with extensive coloured banding and polychrome work, a style in vogue in England at the time. However, Bishop Short insisted on a stone finish. In order for this to occur Bishop Short purchased Butterfield's plans. These were revised twice by local architect EJ Woods from the firm Wright, Woods and Hamilton. |
