The former Congregational Chapel, Gawler Place, Adelaide. This chapel was designed by George Strickland Kingston and opened in 1840. It was replaced in 1867 by the larger Stow Memorial Church in Flinders Street, now renamed Pilgrim Church. Thomas Quinton Stow, South Australia's first Congregational minister served in Adelaide for 19 years. He died in July 1862 in Sydney, but was buried in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide and his name was commemorated in the new church. With the opening of the new and larger church the old chapel served a variety of tenants. In 1923 A Simpson and Son occupied the site. Simpsons was a long established and successful business, best known more recently for Simpson washing machines and other whitegoods. The chapel was subsumed within the site of 45 Pirie Street sometime in 1987 when the ING Building was erected. |
