Description : |
St. Patrick's Church, Grote Street on 28th February 1925. This church replaced an earlier church of St Patrick's on the corner of West Terrace and Grote Street. When it became too small for the congregation a tender was let for a new church which was dedicated on 15 March 1914. The church is in Grote Street between West Terrace and Burton Street.. The architectural firm of Woods Bagot designed the church, said to be based on the Church of the Holy Spirit in Florence. The basic floor plan is that of a 'basilica'. WH Bagot's original plan included a sacristy and a large dome however these features were not carried out as church funds were limited and construction coincided with the unsettled times before the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
