The Ramsgate Hotel was the second hotel to be built in Henley Beach, with the Henley Hotel opening in 1878. It was built in 1897, and The Register newspaper (December 14 1897, page 7) describes it as a 'magnificent hotel...constructed of the best metropolitan bricks.....The elevation to Seaview Road and Main Street is finished in the Italian style of architecture and relieved with balconies and verandahs, the dressings and treatment being executed in South Australian Portland cement". The Ramsgate Hotel is listed on the Australian Heritage Places Inventory. The entry suggests that the ground floor of the hotel has undergone extensive alteration over the years, but that the first floor still retains some intact original architectural elements including staircases, fireplaces and ceiling finishes. The Ramsgate despite some recent controversy is a very popular metropolitan pub, particularly in the summer with its close proximity to the sea. |
