Description : |
The Stag Hotel has enjoyed an unbroken existence on the corner of Rundle Street and East Terrace since its inception in 1849. The original building was demolished in 1902 and this Garlick and Jackman design was built on the site in 1903. Marsden et al (1990, p 151) suggest that the design of the building is unusual with dormer windows breaking the parapet line. The building also features cast iron balustrading typical of the time. The makings of the East End Market were created in the yard of the Stag, which included a weigh bridge, stockyards and stables. It ceased to be a trading centre when the Adelaide Fruit and Produce Exchange was built in 1904, but the hotel remained popular with traders and growers until the markets ceased operating in Rundle Street in 1986. The Stag today remains a popular meeting place catering for city workers and residents and Friday and Saturday night revelers. The Stag is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. |
