Description : |
Trinity Church from an original sketch by the late S.T. Gill, 1840. Now known as Holy Trinity Church Holy Trinity Church, North Terrace is the state's oldest church building. It underwent three stages of construction in 1838, 1845 and 1889. The foundation stone for the stone building was laid by Governor Hindmarsh in January 1838. In December 1844 the building was considered structurally unsafe and was closed until August 1845, after having been partly rebuilt and enlarged. The original tall steeple was replaced by a belfry set on top of the tower. There were suggestions in 1862 that a new Trinity Church should be built, however it was not until 1888 that major changes took place. The original church was enlarged and renovated so that in effect it became a new church. The walls were raised, a new roof constructed, the chancel rebuilt and the tower raised. The architect for this work was Edward Woods. The work was completed in 1889. Today the church that we see is very much that of Woods' design. |
