Many religious groups have run their own bookshops, and sometimes also their own printing firms. The Australian Lutheran Church had a particular reason for overseeing printing works, as the language of the church being mostly German until the First World War. The Lutheran Publishing Company was founded in 1913 by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The company's first premises was at the combined church bookshop in Rundle Street, managed by Theo Marks. In 1925 Heinrich Mund of Balaklava was appointed travelling representative for the firm, selling books on a commission basis and also distributing tracts from the bookshop's truck. He travelled through many South Australian country districts, particularly on the Yorke Peninsula. |
