Description : |
Many business leaders were numbered among members of the Hebrew Congregation, including the large Hains family of Port Adelaide. The Hebrew Congregation ran an extensive teaching and social programme for children and young people, including a Sabbath School. In the 1880s there were almost 60 children on the roll, learning about the Hebrew language and religion. In the synagogue worship all but the sermon was in Hebrew, so it was important for the children to learn the basics of the language. |
