Description : |
The Adelaide Bible Institute (ABI) was founded by two former Hope Lodge missionary students, James Butler and Samuel R Barrett, in 1924 when they began a series of evening Bible classes in the city. Pastor RJ Burrow (who had also trained at Hope Lodge) on his return from missionary work in Bolivia devised a three year course of study, and in 1949 established a residential college. His son, the Rev. Allan Burrow, was the first principal. By 1962 the building at Pearce Avenue, Payneham had 40 full-time students, and building additions were being planned. However, when the former Commonwealth Rehabilitation Centre at 'Mount Breckan' at Victor Harbour came on the market, the ABI purchased the 19th century building on 16 acres of land. By the 1970s there were 100 full-time students. In 1980 the Bible College returned to the city, moving to Wattle Street, Fullarton. |
