Description :
In 1865 the South Australian Wesleyan Conference purchased 13 acres of land at Kent Town as the site of a church school for boys, with the financial support of a wealthy layman, Thomas Greaves Waterhouse. In November 1867 the visiting Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Alfred) laid the foundation stone of the college which was to be named after him. The school opened at the beginning of 1869 with 28 pupils. Today there are almost a thousand students in the school, which has remained one of the most prestigious church schools in Adelaide. This photograph was taken at the opening of the school in 1869.
