Description :

In 1848 a group of Congregationalists began meeting at Aldinga, about 45 kilometres south of Adelaide, and in 1860 built a church there. A few years later, in 1867, the building was sold to the local Baptists and was used by them until 1929. In the early decades of settlement in South Australia there was much inter-denominational involvement, especially among the dissenting church groups, and a number of 'union' chapels were built as shared places of Christian worship. Church affiliation tended to be fluid, particularly in country areas. The building of churches in the country was always a high priority for the early settlers. Even when struggling to make ends meet themselves they gave generously towards building costs, often also contributing the necessary physical labour.
