In every church the largest organisation was the Sunday School. In 1871 there were over 500 Sunday Schools across the state, with a total of 33,000 students. By 1881 69% of school-aged children in South Australia attended a Sunday school. Sunday School numbers remained high well into the 1960s. Adult church attendance was always far lower, with parents more than happy to expose their offspring to the perceived benefits of exposure to religion, while themselves often remaining less committed. Apart from the religious teaching, a major attaction was the traditional celebrations associated with the Sunday School. There were the anniversary concerts and tea treats, and of course the picnics. The children were taken into the country or to a park, participated in organised games, and were lavishly fed.
