Flinders argues that Francois Peron was fully aware of the English expedition's prior discoveries on the South Australian coast. Peron was present in Port Jackson (Sydney) when Flinders showed one of his charts of the newly discovered coast to Captain Baudin and his officers. The French at this time accepted Flinders's prior discovery of the majority of the South Australian coastline. Flinders includes an extract from the French account.

Captain Nicolas Baudin died on Mauritius in 1803 on the voyage home to France. As a result the account of the expedition was written by Francois Peron, who contrived to write the entire account without reference to Baudin, who was extremely unpopular with the officers and scientists aboard his ship. Perhaps if Baudin had lived to write the account matters may have been different. Peron himself died in 1810, and Louis Freycinet continued the second volume of the account. Peron and Freycinet had even chosen not to use Baudin's place names, preferring instead to honour the men of the new French Republic and the Empire.
