Maps showing Descartes Bay and Bridgewater Bay in Victoria and Murat Bay in South Australia. Relief shown by hachures
The French and English names along the South Australian coast are generally the result of the explorations of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin between 1802-03. Flinders explored from the west and Baudin's expedition approached from the east. When Flinders was detained on Mauritius for over six years, and with Baudin dying only shortly before Flinders arrived there, the scientists and hydrographers from the Baudin expedition were able to apply their own choice of names to coastal features, ignoring Flinders' rights as first discoverer. On the chart of Murat Bay, as it is still known today, a number of Flinders' names have been displaced. Ile Eugene is Saint Peter Island, as named by Flinders; Baie Jean-Bart and Baie Treville is Flinders' Smoky Bay. Cap Jerome was named Peter Point by Flinders. In the second map Baie Tourville is Bridgewater Bay in Victoria, and Cap Montaigne is Cape Nelson. In 1824 the French published a second edition of the account of the Baudin expedition in which they returned to the maps the names given by the English discoverers, Flinders in South Australia and James Grant in the south-east of South Australia and in western Victoria. He had sailed this section of coastline in 1801 in the Lady Nelson. |
