Description :

Charles Sturt had been exploring in the Barrier Ranges and the desert regions of northern South Australia and across the border in New South Wales for nearly 12 months, at times pinned to his base at Depot Glen on Preservation Creek by the intense heat and the lack of water in the regions around him, but persistently making forays in search of good lands and permanent water. In early October 1845, after days of crossing a barren region, suddenly they came upon an abundance of grass, and then a large sheet of water. They had discovered Cooper Creek.

Sturt had noted the day before that the plain he was crossing was subject to floods, but the expanse of water he had found, the abundant grass and the dense trees, after the wide and bare plain was a revelation and he could only describe it in superlatives: magnificent, imposing and unusual.
