Description :

Charles Sturt left his depot at Fort Grey on 9 October on yet another attempt to explore to the north in search of good pastures, good water supplies and perhaps an inland sea. He had with him Stuart, Morgan and Mack and ten weeks supply of flour and tea. The sand-hills he crossed were nothing compared to those he had encountered previously. After travelling some 96 miles they approached an area that seemed prone to flooding, and Sturt and Stuart walked up a small hill to observe the land ahead, while the other men prepared the night's camp. There appeared to be a line of trees ahead, but in the twilight it was difficult to tell. Their expectations for the next day were high.

Fort Grey was Sturt's most forward depot at 29 degrees south, longitude 141 degrees. From here earlier in the year he had made his furtherest push to the north-west and been beaten back by the high sand-hills of the Simpson Desert. At Fort Grey he had left Dr John Browne in charge.
