Ernest Giles was still suffering from his ordeal as they searched for Gibson. This impeded them a little, but the cooler weather helped. In fact it was now quite chilly at night. It had also rained a little more, partially obscuring the tracks, but they were aided in part by the clumps of spinifex that Giles and Gibson had burnt. After retrieving the gear that had been left behind, they proceeded to track Gibson's path, where he had turned off the main track and followed instead the two loose horses. Giles and Tietkens had now gone three nights without water, reserving it for the horses.

Despite Giles' condition they still travelled 30 miles, a respectable distance, but Giles wished that they could travel more in the faintest hope of finding Gibson alive. Their own lives depended on their horses' condition however, and he provided as much rest for them as he could.
