Warburton's expedition had by 4 November 1873 decided to make for the Oakover River where water and help was assured. Both Warburton and his son Richard were very weak after the extreme difficulties they had endured during this expedition. They were in dire need of water to carry on their journey and Charley the Aboriginal guide had been sent out to find some. Although Warburton was worried about his prolonged absence he decided he could wait no longer for Charley's return. At 6pm they set out and eight miles along Charley returned at last indicating he had located a supply of water. Some of the explorers used the knowledge of the Aboriginal people by taking them with them on their expeditions: their bushcraft would help the explorers find water and feed for the horses, bullocks and camels of their transport. It was hoped also that their presence would help with the tribal groups met along the way. Charley was invaluable to Warburton on his expedition and found water holes by tracking Aboriginal people or by watching the movements of birds which frequently indicated water. Warburton was fully aware of this invaluable assistance. The Oakover River in Western Australian has featured a number of times in explorers' accounts and always as a fall back position of safety: Frank Gregory used it in 1861 and Larry Wells would search for its safety in 1896. |
