Description :

Police Corporal Alfred Burtt, with Police trooper Mole had been directed to join Peter Egerton Warburton's main expedition exploring in the region of what is now known as Lake Eyre South. Between 18 and 26 October Burtt found little water or only brackish water. Many night camps were made with no water for the men or their horses. His covering letter to George Hamilton the senior inspector indicates that he considered that there was no continuous lake barring the passage north as was believed to exist at the time.

Burtt's letter to Hamilton also highlights the problems faced when endeavouring to meet up with another group of men. A direction or possible location might be given, but the availability of water could dictate a change of route, with no way to contact the other group, except personally. This area of the state was still only slightly explored. Burtt also highlights the difficulties for horses as the hard uneven ground wore down their horseshoes.
