Strangways and Hutchinson described the Murray Mouth; the channel was about 400 yards wide and the current running at about 5-6 knots per hour. They also sounded the depth of the channel and found it to be 3-4 fathoms deep. They then travelled upstream, sounding as they went. Their bullock cart paralleled their course along the shore. The cart's progress was halted when a stream was discovered. This was Currency Creek, named after their boat. The land about the creek was good grassland, and they decided to leave their cart here with a small party and continue on up river. Earlier in 1837 Hutchinson had been the first settler to climb Mount Lofty. This had also been climbed in 1831 by the explorer Collet Barker from which point he had discovered the Sturt River and Port River inlet. Thomas Bewes Strangways was engaged to Governor Hindmarsh's daughter and Strangways Terrace, North Adelaide is named after him. |
