View of 'Herbig's Tree' at Springton. Johann Friedrich Herbig arrived in the colony of South Australia in 1855. He leased land from George Fife Angas near Springton in the Barossa Valley (about 60 kilometres north east of Adelaide), but was so poor that he lived in the hollow trunk of a red gum tree. Herbig married in 1858 and after several children were born, the family moved into a house. Herbig eventually became quite prosperous and prominent in the local community. |
