Description : |
After some success in testing atomic bombs in Western Australia and South Australia from 1952, the British government decided to establish a permanent proving ground in the desert of South Australia. Regular atomic testing began atMaralinga, in South Australia's west, on 27 September 1956. This newspaper article reports the announcement made by the Minister of Supply that the atomic tests at Maralinga were safe and there was "no possible risk of danger or harm now or at any future time to any persons, stock or property". Subsequently, however, there have been numerous incidences of radiation sickness, chronic illness and birth defects amongst the Australian and British service personnel who served at Maralinga and in the Aboriginal communities on whose lands the tests occurred. |
