Description : |
View of the decorative design of the Beehive Corner building on the north-east corner of King William Street and Rundle Mall. The corner turret is topped with a model bee which weighs 45 kilograms and is made of aluminium gilded with gold. The Beehive Corner building was built in the Gothic Revival style in 1895-96. Much of its decorative work was removed over the years, but it was restored to its 1890s appearance in 1998. At the time of the restoration, there was much public debate about whether there ever was a bee on top of the turret and, if there was, what it looked like. When the new bee was in place, many claimed that it looked more like a European wasp than a bee. It is thought that the original bee disappeared in the 1940s or '50s. |
