The old bottling hall at Seppeltsfield winery. Seppeltsfield is one of the main towns of the Barossa Valley, a major wine-producing area situated about 60 kilometres north east of Adelaide. Seppeltsfield was named by Joseph Seppelt, a Silesian migrant, in 1852 when he bought property in the Barossa area on which to grow tobacco. When this was unsuccessful, Seppelt planted wheat, corn and grapes. The vineyard thrived and Seppelt produced his first vintage in his wife's dairy. By 1865 Seppetfield was South Australia's largest winery. The main grape varieties grown in the Barossa Valley are shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. |
